Sydney Coastal Walk: Bondi to Coogee

Sydney Coastal Walk: Bondi to Coogee

Bondi Beach might be Sydney’s most infamous beach, but there are so many other beaches in Sydney worth exploring. The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is the best way to discover Sydney’s beaches and spend half a day gawking at the city’s beautiful coastline. Here’s what to expect on the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk.

Tip: the coastal walk is nearly four miles long and takes 1-2 hours to complete at a leisurely place. You’ll definitely want to allot more time, however, to stop and enjoy the beaches and views along the way.

Bondi Beach

It should come as no surprise that a visit to Bondi Beach is a must-do while in Sydney. Sydney’s most iconic beach is famous for its glistening ocean, pristine sands and impressive waves beloved by surfers. Plan to spend some time soaking up the rays and views, or opt to take a dip at the dramatic oceanfront pool at the Bondi Icebergs Club. Admission costs AU$6.50 and includes access to the pool and sauna.

Bondi to Tamarama

The Bondi to Coogee walk begins near the Icebergs pool. From there, follow the road and take the stairway down toward the ocean. The concrete walking track offers sweeping views of North and South Bondi. One of the best parts of the walk is just around the corner from Bondi as Tamarama Beach comes into view. The views are stunning!

Tip: if you’re in Sydney during the spring, be sure to check out the annual Sculpture by the Sea outdoor exhibition. The Bondi to Tamarama walk hosts the event around October/November every year where over a 100 sculptures are displayed along the coast.

Tamarama to Bronte

Continuing south from Tamarama, the path joins the paved road, then diverts down a staircase leading to Bronte Beach. Tamarama Beach and Bronte Beach are not very far apart, and the walk is level and offers great views of the Pacific Ocean. Be sure to check out the oceanfront Bronte rock pool where admission is free!

Bronte to Clovelly

Travel Guide Australia Sydney Coastal WalkBeing about halfway through, Bronte is a popular end point for most, but don’t stop there! Continue past the Bronte rock pool and follow the path that leads up some steep stairs, joins the road and then separates again. The expansive and historic Waverly cemetery perched atop sandstone cliffs and rock platforms will soon come into view. The path is level as you make your way through the cemetery and on towards Clovelly Beach, which sits at the end of a narrow bay.

Clovelly to Coogee

Continuing south from Clovelly Beach, Coogee Beach will soon come into your frame of view. Clovelly Beach is much more tranquil than Bondi Beach and sits at the mouth of a narrow bay between two rocky ridges. It’s the perfect place to sit, relax and marvel at the natural beauty that is the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk.

Tip: start the walk from the southern end at Coogee Beach and head north past Tamarama, Bronte and finish with spectacular views of Bondi Beach and the oceanfront Iceberg pool.

I have nwver been to Australia but even I have heard pf Bondi Beach. I live the idea of walking along the coast and exploring some of the other, more hidden beaches that Sydney has to offer along the coast. Thanks for a great post!

This post makes me nostalgic. My boyfriend and I planned to go to Sydney because of an airline promo from our country to there. I did the itinerary. Bondi to Coogee activity is one of the most important spot in our itinerary. We planned everything from clothing to foods to the do’s and don’ts when we are in the Sydney beaches. But when I received my tourist visa result, it was declined. I hope someday in the future, we can still visit Sydney and enjoy the sights of Bondi to Coogee. Thanks for sharing.

Didn’t have time to squeeze a trip to Melbourne…but I will make it there someday! Would love to explore more of Australia including out west.

Although I have been to Bondi, I never knew about the Coastal Walk. A pretty cool way to admire the Australian coastline even more and it looks spectacular from your photographs. Thanks for all the details as i’m sure they will be extremely helpful for whenever I make it there again. Love the idea of beach-side sea water pools too and it is becoming quite a rave these days.

  6. April 19, 2017 / 1:17 am

Ahhh I want to go here. I’ve been seeing pics of the iceberg pools and if I ever do go here, I’d check out both. The second (free one) looks less crowded too, would you recommend that one or the first?

Also, I’ve tried applying to OZ once when I was a student and my visa was declined. Scared to apply again.

    • April 19, 2017 / 11:06 pm

The Bronte rock pool is free and easy to access from the beach. You have to pay to enter the Bondi Icebergs, but you can’t beat that view! Hope you make it there someday!

Wow what a beautiful walk! Australia is on my list of places to visit but I I have to over come my fear of flying first!!

I hate, hate, hate flying, but I have a burning desire to see the world!

  8. April 19, 2017 / 4:50 am

This is stunning! Just look at the color of the water!

Ireland has many cliff walks as well but obviously the views of this one are a *little* different to the ones in Ireland haha! For one, the water looks a lot nicer!

What a great way to spend a day. But you’re right, it would take me a LOT longer than 2 hours because I’d be stopping so much!

    • April 19, 2017 / 11:07 pm

A visit to Ireland is high on my travel list. The coastlines look stunning there also!

  9. April 19, 2017 / 10:07 am

I’ve never heard of this place in Sidney. Looks beautiful for walking.

  16. April 19, 2017 / 7:57 pm

This really does have to be one of the most picturesque coastal walks in the world. Certainly, you did a great job capturing the place in your photos although I guess that task must be made significantly easier when the setting is so idyllic.

    • April 19, 2017 / 11:09 pm

Thanks! It’s hard to take a bad photo when the views are that stunning.

  17. April 19, 2017 / 8:22 pm

Ok, I want to swim in the ocean and the pool at the Iceberg. Looks so cool! Sounds like it will be a really great walk. Are there restaurants etc along the route or nearby?

    • April 19, 2017 / 11:11 pm

There are restaurants at Bondi not too far from the walking trail and other places to eat a bit more inland from the the rest of the coastal walk, but still easily accessible.

Thanks for the details. Can’t believe that the oceanfront pool admission is so cheap, this being in Sydney.

    • April 19, 2017 / 11:14 pm

One of the few affordable things in Sydney, lol.

This coastal walk looks absolutely beautiful! I have always wondered where those oceanfront pools are located. The Rock pool looks neat to dip into and a bonus with free admission. Coogee beach does look a little more tranquil and relaxing to visit along the way.

  29. April 22, 2017 / 8:46 pm

Me and my friends do this walk every once in a while. It is such a lovely walk and we can’t wait to go for our next one. I specially love this walk in November when they have Sculpture by the sea 🙂

  30. April 23, 2017 / 10:56 am

Looks so beautiful! All these beaches and the turqoise water. I have heard so much about the Bondi Beach, and I always wanted to visit there, but I didn’t know there are so many other beaches to see next to it as well. Must get to Australia soon!

  31. May 3, 2017 / 6:54 am

I love the look of the Bondi Icebergs pool! I saw a picture of it once surrounded by icebergs, very dramatic. PS SO excited I found your site! It’s so easy to read and the picture quality is ACE! Can’t wait to read more of your stuff!
